Italy, Harvest →
Late September is the best month to eat in Italy: tomatoes at their end, figs and grapes at their start, the summer crowds gone. The Ligurian sea is still warm, Venice is breathable again, and Florence’s markets are at their fullest. We route it north to south, by train.
By region

A travel calendar, working backwards from weather and crowds.
West: the Alps for skiing, Paris and Amsterdam without the crowds, Lisbon and the Canary Islands for mild sun. East: Vienna’s ball season, Kraków and Prague under snow, and the thermal baths of Budapest.
West: Andalusia and Sicily before the heat, the Netherlands and Paris in bloom, London as the parks fill in. East: Greece and Croatia’s coast before the season opens, Slovenia’s lakes, and Transylvania in spring green.
West: Scandinavia’s long light, Scotland and Ireland at their greenest, the Norwegian fjords. East: the Baltic capitals, Poland’s lake district, Montenegro and Albania’s coast, and the Carpathian mountains.
West: harvest season in Italy, Provence, and Portugal’s Douro, the Basque Country for pintxos. East: the Greek islands after the crowds, Hungary’s Tokaj and Georgia’s wine regions at harvest, Dubrovnik and Split in soft light.
West: Christmas markets in Germany, Alsace, and Belgium, Madrid and Barcelona without the crowds. East: Vienna, Prague, and Budapest’s holiday markets, Kraków’s old town in lights, and Sofia for winter food.
